A Slice of the Country

Hi bloggers,

A fellow blogger introduced me to a short story slam over at Bluebell Books. Here is my story based on the beautiful image above.

The wheat fields flirted with Sandra’s bare legs. They were tall and dressed in summer gold. The wind made her dress rise and salute. It was enough for Bobby to catch a glimpse of her britches.
“Nice legs,” he whistled. Sandra turned around red as a tomato.

“I knew you’d be spying on me,” she answered catching the hem of her skirt.

“Uh, don’t be mad at me,” he laughed. “The wind was playing tricks on you. Take your beef with him.”

“I swear you’re like my shadow,” Sandra answered slowly. “How’d you know I’d be out here?” Bobby reached out his arms from where he was standing. Sandra instinctively buried her head in his chest.

She had traded in the city life for a slice of the country, where the sky was rich and tasty as blueberry pie. Where the stars winked hello as she laid her back beneath the heavenly deep. Where the birds called to her from their nests. Where the cows mooed morning gossip. Where the rooster made the sunrise.

Sandra looked up into Bobby’s eyes. They were dark and full as storm clouds. She could sniff country rain on his skin.

“You were going to leave without saying goodbye. That ain’t fair,” he spoke sternly.

“I ain’t got no southern manners,” she laughed with a drawl.

“Yea, you’re still a city snob,” Bobby smiled. He leaned in close and gazed into her eyes.

Sandra felt her cheeks grow as red as apples. She threw Bobby back with one great shove.

“Look me up in the city,” Sandra shouted. She could no longer mask her tears and quickly turned to walk away. She felt the sunset against her back bathing her in a river of colors. She vowed to stop wearing overalls but couldn’t part with her suede cowboy boots.

Grand Sky

Hi all,

If you visit Grand Central in NYC, you may be greeted by a beautiful, teal sky. The grand entry to the station also beams in teal splendor.

We Introduce Ourselves

Hi all,

This piece was inspired by the first line of Emily Dickinson's poem We Introduce Ourselves.

We introduce ourselves
In passing smiles
Pearly gates
Across those lips

How you beguile
Erstwhile you kindle
Summer glances
And romances
‘Neath the city

Skyline of tangerine
Against pristine
Steel and concrete
Pausing at our
Statue of Liberty

Swirl of car horns
Taxi cabs
Flagging yellow
In concrete meadows

It is ours
We introduce ourselves
Scaling towers
Beyond this city

City Skyline

Hi skywatchers,

Gazing at the city skyline, my camera captured a very unique and wavy color scheme.

Smoky city
‘Neath the blue sky
Of sunset’s blush

City Sky

Hi Sky Watchers,

Happy New Year! Here are a pair of photos from the city skyline. The design on one building was particularly stunning and unique. It reminds me of a golden sun or flower. The second picture is a beautiful statue of Gandhi trekking on soft mounds of snow. He is quite an inspiring figure.

Rejection

Last week, I received a rejection letter for a poem I submitted for a poetry contest. It was entitled City Life. Rejection is a tough thing to swallow, but I will try to take something positive from this.

Great city rafters
Perpendicular lines as guides
Melodious car horns
Distinguishable then receding
The gaze of cold city folks
Embracing dead winter's embers
The jive of salacious pubs
Drunken humor spinning rivers
Sky scrapers joust like colossal gods
Beneath ink black heavens
Sullen alleys mouth agape
Glittering moon steps float on pavement
Rustic gutters fusing with heat
Sewers belching burlesque prose
Lithe cats scurry like shadows
Yellow eyes suspended in crescent love
Street lamps roam stone pavement
In desolate silence like urchins
Time exhales eternal winds
Resurrecting trash, scrap, and litter
Inconspicuous trench coats assails the night
Trailing gun smoke spits in fright
Listless scarlet sets her sirens
Seductively calling her lover's eyelid
Intimations tremble on subway's lane
Screeching, jolting through the tunnel’s maze
