Liberty

The image is Supermoon 2013, by Julio Cortez, AP

Liberty measures
Her brilliant flame in the sky
Hope on her shoreline

A man most broken
Casts his eyes upon freedom
American hope

I'm sure that's how it looked to my great grandfather, a former Lieutenant in the Czar's army who built a very successful business as a butcher. My family once owned a very nice building in Amsterdam, New York. The downstairs had been made into a mortuary, as my great uncle was a mortician. My great grandmother lived in an apartment upstairs. The building is now torn down and paved over as a parking lot.

She was definitely once a symbol of great hope and your haiku reflects that. I wonder what she means to others now?

Desperate men and women, hope desperately! Liberty engenders such hope - may it ever shine!

I lift my lamp beside the golden door.
