Rain Dance

Today is another edition of Thursday Tales. The amazing photo above is by Spider13Bug.

Nina was surprised how dark and gray the skies became. She had just begun her long walk from school. Her book bag hung heavily from her shoulders. There was much to do, she thought and she barely had time to brace for the rain. The skies opened up and rain fell hard against her back. The rain soaked her shirt and pleated skirt. Heat rose from her chest and she was blowing hot smoke. She was annoyed by the downpour and cursed beneath her breath. Nina slipped on the muddy road and crashed to the ground. Tears welled up in her eyes, but she heard the cackle of rain in the wind. Raindrops rippled along her cheeks and she laughed. Nina stood and twirled in place. She opened her tongue and tasted the sky against her lips. Her arms flew up like the wings of a bird. Nina discovered her own rain dance.

Blue winter's face
Icicles hanging like jewels
White clouds her raiment

Buds sprouting in her hair

She's dressed in butterfly wings

Her face is red as love
She's bathed in barbecue and sweetened tea
Her summer dress blows hot in the breeze

Fall's camouflage
She sleeps beneath orange and brown leaves
Crisp, autumn air is intoxicating

Here is another edition of Thursday Tales. The beautiful photo above is by Katja Faith.

She had fallen into one of her great revelries. She tried to hide herself from her darkest thoughts. The night was black and starless. The air was desolate and hot. She was trapped in a haunting world and balled herself up in a cocoon. Tears streamed down her cheeks like rain, and her hair fluttered like a raven.

When she closed her eyes, she saw a painted doll. Her lips grew like a soft, red rose. Her arms were the color of striped candy cane and polka-dotted like a ladybug. Her hair was long and velvet, and a red ribbon danced towards her. She saw a twinkle from her ruby, red shoes. She thought of Dorothy. She thought of home. A light flickered in the horizon. A soft, yellow breeze kissed her cheeks.

When she woke up, she was greeted by the breath of the hot sun. Summer swirled and buzzed about her. Her eyes observed the clear, blue skies. She puffed out her cheeks like the clouds and exhaled. The dark world of her nightmare vanished.

The young doll of her dreams laid beside her. She was red and white, polka-dotted and striped. Loneliness melted in the doll’s soft, brown eyes. She laughed, kissed her, and called her Ruby.

Blowing in from the wind, cool sway

His shadow rises, body sways

Lost Youth

Here is a story for Thursday's Tales. They have already posted a new tale for this week, but I was inspired to write about the photo above. The artwork is by IzNoGood.

Lauren had taken an unusual route through the forest. Her feet were guided by an invisible compass. Her mind was swimming with the events of that afternoon. She had pressing deadlines at her job and not much time to sit and think. Yet, the open air called her. The sky swirled and seemed vast. There was a message from the universe, she thought. Life was more than meetings and emails.

Lauren gasped when she spotted a young girl in the woods. The girl stood still without emotion. She looked quite old fashioned in a frilly dress. Her long curls and skin were deprived of sunlight. The brim of her hat hung low and swallowed her face.

The girl didn't flinch, and Lauren perceived she was carved in stone. Suddenly, she heard the cry of the girl. Lauren inched closer towards her.

"Are you lost little girl," Lauren asked her. At first, the girl didn't answer but lifted her head. Her face was almost gray, but her eyes were bluer than the sky.

"You've only noticed me today," the child answered. "But I have chased you my whole life. Won't you come and play?" Lauren was confused by the child's response. She couldn't possibly know her.

"I'm sorry but I don't believe we've met," Lauren began. "I have so much to do today. Come back with me and I'll phone your parents." The girl shrank from her like a shadow. Her blue eyes grew dim like night.

"I wish you could remember," the girl sobbed. She started to run like the wind and vanished beyond the trees. Only her hat remained and laid softly on the earth.

Puzzled, Lauren lifted her hat off the ground. She soon forgot the encounter and returned to her world of work and deadlines. She did not recognize the girl of her youth but noticed a shadow growing in her place.

Blue's Pie (Short Story)

He made a habit of taking the long way home, though his knees ached and legs dropped like weights. He was addicted to the smell of Ms. Blue's pies wafting from a kitchen window. His tongue turned over her rich, brown crust. His glasses fogged heavily in her baking scent. Sometimes, he caught her dancing in a tight apron. Her curves were on full display. She was hot and juicy like a berry. Alas, he shook himself from the daydream and stole her pie from the windowsill.

Ms. Blue didn't mind her pie thief. She enjoyed his company however brief and discreet. She could hear his heavy, work boots trample her garden. She flew like a bird eluding her captor and watched his old, withered hands tiptoe on her window. Moments later, she heard a faint whistle. She fancied he was satisfied and resumed her post in the kitchen.

One day, she danced by the window and caught his glance.

"Come in," she said at last. New love was baking in the oven. Their hearts were glazed and hot like crust.

Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers on this special occasion. This poem is written in a poetic style called the Ottava Rima.

Gentle hands of mother guides her young in dawn
Aspiring wings of young seek her loving arms
Sprinting in the summer fields of luscious lawns
Her wings protect when the storm claws and swarms
Like a deer lighting the path for her fawn
Mother possesses a twinkle and a charm

The Angel's Seat

His soul drifted to an invisible seat. The east winds swirled about him. His eyes wandered west towards the future. An angel beat her wings against his back. Her feathers were silver tipped and dipped in sunlight. She was adorned in a white dress and a crown of white roses.

“Choose the path you seek,” she commanded. The earth grew still until he heard the faint beating of his heart. Sweat dropped from his brow like rain. He agonized over returning to his lost past. But he desired to know his future.

“I chose my future,” he answered.

“Follow me,” she sang and her wings expanded in the wind. An ethereal light fell upon her brow. He caught the scent of her hair wafting. He sunk in the chair, and the fragrant garden parted. He woke from his revelry. The angel was gone.
