Little Sun

Hi all,

I've written this short story for Thursday Tales. I like the idea of dipping into longer prose and this photo provides lovely inspiration. The artist is Einshine at DeviantArt.

Amy Lee hated the white walls in her father’s office. Sometimes, she waited for hours staring blankly at the blinds. The sunlight was visible and teased her. Saturdays were most unpleasant here, she thought. She watched the stone faced people file in gray suits. They didn’t smile, laugh, or talk. She stuck out her tongue at them. The gray suits marched in anger and scolded her.

Secretary Wan was very kind to the young girl. “Come here little sun,” she laughed. She coaxed Amy Lee towards a glass table and magic marker.

“This is a special, magic marker. You can imagine anything with your mind and put it here.”

“I wish I could paint my father’s walls,” Amy Lee sighed.

“Use your imagination,” Wan instructed. Amy Lee took the blank notebook and marker. She laid her elbows on the cold, glass table and noticed her own reflection. The room did not inspire her. Restless, she swung her legs back and forth and banged into the table. Secretary Wan rushed over to her young guest.

“Little Sun, what’s wrong?” Wan raised her brows in horror. Amy Lee didn’t answer but crossed her little arms.

“I don’t feel like drawing! I want to go out and play,” Amy Lee shouted. Her voice echoed and stung Wan.

“You can’t leave the lobby,” Wan informed her. Amy Lee’s eyes grew thick and blue and tears began falling down.

“Don’t cry Little Sun. I am a very good artist and shall make something for you.” Amy Lee dried up her tears and tugged at her skirt.

“Please draw for me! I’d like that very much.” Wan leaned in and pressed the magic marker against paper. Amy Lee gasped as a yellow butterfly flew from her pen. It was sweet and yellow like her shirt. She framed the butterfly around pretty, pink roses and green stems. She filled the whole paper with butterflies and flowers. Amy Lee danced in a beautiful meadow of art.

“Can I keep it,” Amy Lee exclaimed.

“Of course, Little Sun. And I have one more surprise in store.” Amy Lee hopped at the word surprise. She giggled and clasped her hands against her face. Secretary Wan rolled out a projector and filled the white walls with beautiful art.

Her father had emerged and glanced at Secretary Wan. “I hope my little Amy Lee has been no trouble.”

“Oh no, Mr. Lee. She’s been very sweet. Little Sun and I have spent the day making art.”

Comb (O.S.I)

Hi all,

This poem is written for O.S.I. and the theme this week is comb. The winter storm has inspired my latest work.

She combs the snow
From her hair
Lets it shake
In soft mounds
Of white
Chilly frost
Against her ears
Jack Frost’s
Lovely breath

Pours a cup
Of hot chocolate
Lips puckered
Inhaling cocoa
Soothing steps
A liquid bath
Seductive splash
Chocolate dash

The Gift

Hi all,

Wishing you all the joy, happiness, and love of the Christmas season. May tomorrow be a day filled with good cheer.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord (Luke 2:11)

The day star
Beckons our eyes
Towards the darkness
Remnant of heaven
Giver of life
Light and hope
Lost in the heights
Of glory and wonder
Gift and giver
Love and light

Winter's Children

Winter's children
Atop snow peaks
Snowy angels
With blue cheeks
We seek
Woolly lambs
Dressed in fleece
Icicle candy cane
Sculptured doe
Our wonderland
Rivals the North Pole
Snow babies
With snowball heads
Sound asleep
In winter's bed

Sky Watch Friday: Melting Sky

Hi sky watchers,

This is my sky watch entry concluding a very cold and wintry week. Winter is beautiful bejeweled in snow and ice, but she is also cold and relentless!!

Melting sky
Warms my limbs
Icy breath of winter
Looming beneath my skin
Unfurling sky blanketing blue
Beautiful canopy enticing a swim

Win (O.S.I.)

Hi all,
I've written this poem for O.S.I. This week's prompt is win.

Rocks and edges
They won’t last
At journeys end
A distant past
The future yearns
New Eden calls
Brave the storm
No deed is small
Courage to begin
Created to win

Conclusion: 12 Days

This poem is the conclusion of my 12 Days of Christmas. I hope you enjoyed reading. This poem captures the childlike splendor and joy of the season.

Tiny tots glue their cheeks against store windows
Toy soldiers marched along artificial snow
The dollies blinked with all their beatitudes
Spirited ballerinas twinkle with a fiery glow

Toy soldiers marched along artificial snow
Twelve drummers ratta-tat-tat
Spirited ballerinas twinkle with a fiery glow
Model planes dive dangerously low

Twelve drummers ratta-tat-tat
Guns pop a cork and blast
Model planes dive dangerously low
Cherry red racers speeding fast

Guns pop a cork and blast
Train engine chugs on wooden tracks
Cherry red racers speeding fast
Young eyes forever hope the season lasts

Temptress/Eleven Pipers

My eleventh day of Christmas has romance, longing, and a bit of suspense.

Temptress Eve-she does not lend
Matrimony of love-she does not send
Pine needles of Christmas past-they neither bend
Presents from the heart-she feverishly spends

How does love taste on her tongue?
A berry whose juices rot in her lungs
Queen of the pipers, eleven men fancy
But music does not provoke her heels dancing

Murmur of the heart-can it rise?
By all estimations she’s surprised
To find her love brimming with affection
Her spirit guided in a new direction

Ten Lords

Hi all,

Today is the tenth day of Christmas: Ten Lords a Leapin' This poem makes me think of peace on earth. May the leaders of this world display a little generosity and love for other nations.

When the ten lords gather
From the farthest corners of the earth
West, East, North, and South
In processional splendor
Migrating to the epicenter
War and politics dissipate
In a season of garland and ice
The band strikes up and plays
And the lords leap and ascend
Gallivanting for the people

Nine Ladies Dancing

Hi all,

Today is the ninth day of Christmas: nine ladies dancing. This sounds like an entertaining gift!

‘Twas the love of his dreams
Gleaming in the bed of his eyes
Rising on the bed of her silhouette
Pirouettes smooth in rhythm and jive
Alive in the hips, shimmering blues
Hues of frost and the moon
Spooning out upon his lips
Dipping in the shadows
Dancing ladies in nine
Fine beauties bejeweled in light

Eight Maids

Hi all,

I've written this poem for the eighth day of Christmas: Eight Maids A-Milking. Each day poses a unique challenge, and I've noticed some are a bit random. Milking Maids as a gift? Well, here's my poem : )

Milking maids
In eights
Run against
The udder
Milk as smooth
As silk
Drifting down
The bucket
Churning butter
Sweating brow
Hard day’s work

Hi all,

Graceful dance of love

O.S.I: Free(dom)

Hi all,
This poem is written for O.S.I. The theme this week is free(dom). I've also woven in my sixth day of Christmas: Six Geese A Laying : )

Horses dream of flying
Her father fancied
His voice echoed in the shadows
Down the valley and shallow creek
Jules astounded, stretched against his knees
Her eyes beseeching him to speak

They trot in open fields
Galloping wide into the sunset
Stretching in the heavenly stars
The wind riding in their mane

Reaching the border of a farmer’s fence
Kicking and neighing with all their might
Laying their heads upon the post
They retire to green pastures
Gnawing on dew grass

They marveled at birds in blue skies
Soaring beyond their reach
Six geese laying their wings
Against their worn, old backs
Taunting them to fly at last

Conquering freedom, soaring fast
Beyond their imprisoned gates
Jules had followed papa
Where the horses neighed

Five Golden Rings

Hi all,

I used the poetic style Nonet to write my Fifth Day of Christmas: Five Golden Rings.

She chased five rings swimming in the night
Singularly gold, full of light
Spinning away from her sight
Eluding her, she cried
Leaping up, she tried
Finding the prize
She treasured
Her ring
Shine

The Dream/ Four Calling Birds

This story is written for Thursday Tales and the fourth day of Christmas: Four Calling Birds. The accompanying photo is by Preetilata at White Window.

When Salvador dreamed, the world of noise, car horns, and traffic receded from memory. A quiet darkness washed over him like spilled ink. He drifted in his chair and heard the rain cascade against his window. His eyes dropped low like the sun setting deep.

A dream slowly kindled within him, flickering like a white moon in the night. Four, silvery shadows drew tantalizingly near him. Dancing, their arms circled above like wings. Their hair strung together in a collective symphony. Four calling birds nestled softly beside him. Perched on either sides of his arms, he gathered in speed and flight. He could drift to the farthest depths of the universe. He could swim amongst the stars and drink in the galaxies.

A knock at the door woke him amidst the glare of the streetlight. Car horns honked mercilessly and traffic snaked along wet pavement. The rainstorm had exhaled into the night of purple haze. He had hoped the dream would never end.

Three French Hens

Hi all,

Here is a poem for the Third Day of Christmas.

Lady Babette’s
Three French hens
Rose one evening
In the wintry night

Cossette, her golden hen
Bathed herself in cow’s milk
And scented herself in perfume

Danielle, a fine red hen
Intoxicated herself with wine
And pampered herself in silk

Fauntine, her brown hen
Adventurous and spry
Perched atop a Christmas tree
My don’t I look fine!

Amusing prima donnas
The moon laughed
He basked in the folly
Of the night

Sky Watch & Turtle Doves

Hi all,

I am combining my Sky Watch post with the 2nd Day of Christmas. I hope you all enjoy the wonder of the skies.

A pair of turtle doves
Coo softly against my window
A sprig of holly in their beaks
They flutter in my wintry dreams
When I wake, the doves have soared
Beyond the sunset of memory

12 Days

To ring in the holiday season, I will be writing a poem each day for the 12 Days of Christmas. I hope you all take time to enjoy the holiday season…perhaps there’ll be a Partridge in a Pear Tree in your future : )

Enchantress in green
Silver bells in tow
A candy cane affair
Adoring partridge casts his shadow
A pear tree ripe and bold
Ornamental fruit and ice
Lips desiring a slice
Whistling wonderland twice as nice

O.S.I.: Meld

Hi bloggers,

Hope you all enjoyed the Thanksgiving weekend. I am posting this for One Single Impression. The theme this week is meld.

Melding sunset upon your face
Blues, reds, gold of light
Time itself sweetened by your embrace
Laughter in the hours of daylight

Melding your poetry after dark
Syllables rise, rhythm sparks
Lay awhile under the stars
Chasing shadows however far

Melding imagination in the wind
Thoughts loose like rolling skies
Swept upon the bed of dreams
Awakened on the knees of sunrise

Happy Thanksgiving

Three hundred and sixty five
Days of abundance
Cupfuls of warmth, love, and time
Shared beauty of earth
Measured in the breath of life
Gazing in wonder
At the wide open skies
Family and memories
Make the days sweeter
Friendship lightens
The daily beating drum
In all things
In all seasons
In past and present
Future journeys
Ponder, pause, and pray
May all give thanks

Some Holiday Cheer

Hi bloggers,

One, ceremonious tree lighting ignited the darkened sky before a raucous crowd of friends, families, and neighbors. Infused with rock music from We the Kings, screaming teenage girls, and merry shoppers, the event was blissfully lighthearted and full of holiday cheer. We’ll be giving thanks and dreaming of turkey Thursday. How will you ring in the holidays?

Night of Beauty

Hi bloggers,

This is a new poem I wrote inspired by the beauty and joy of the universe.

A night of beauty
In the mystic sky
An amber rose
Lit like the moon
Entices your nose to dip
Full, encircling like the eclipse
Velvet arms of midnight
Guide me towards twinkling stars
However high, however far
What a night of beauty

Storm clouds receding
Horizon now sublime

Echoes (O.S.I.)

Hi bloggers,

I've written two poems for O.S.I. The theme this week is echoes.

Deep
Receding
Echoes
Shimmering
Across the water
Leaping
In the skyline

God’s voice
In the wind
Revives
The Universe
Of my heart
Full and wide

*****************
Echoes of poems
Lines rehearsed
Scriptures repeated
Rapture claps
Against my lips
The heart sings
An echo
Of spirit

Venom (Short Story)

Hi all,

I’ve written this short story with the femme fatale in mind. Hope you enjoy my weekend story!

The patrons warned she was the worst creature on earth. But she reigned with unruly might over the male sex, sunk her pearly whites into their flesh, and nibbled at their hearts.

Her kind first seduces you with her eyes. The lines of her dress swerve in silk, lace, and lust. Her eyes hold the world and in one naked leap, you’ll swim towards her. The waters are deceptively shallow and you’ll drown.
You wake in the river of her scent, and she is leaning over you. Her satin glove rises like a sail in the night. You fight the urge to touch her. She extends her hand with a tease, and you obligingly kiss her.

“Dance with me,” she smiles. Her eyes are full of heat and smoke. She presses her hand against the nape of her neck, beads of sweat slowly rolling down.

“It’s hot in here. Let’s take a walk outside,” she says. You cheerily whisk her into the night. Her hands roam about your face, inspecting her man of the hour. She sniffs the boyhood off your skin and laughs in your face.

“You need a silk tie. Deep and midnight blue like your eyes,” she commands. She browses the window of a closed shop. She plays a bit with the lock and thrusts you inside. She undresses you rapidly with her fingers, and you emerge a gentleman. You cock the fedora low on your head and brush its velvet brim.

She parades you in a party of her choosing. She is magnetic and captivating to touch. Leaning in close, she presses her lips upon your cheek. Her laugh is sweet to your ears.

A man recognizes her from across the room and glares with each calculating step. He hurls his fists at you and knocks you backwards. The room is spinning madly and out of focus. Your lip is warm with blood as she flutters above you in emerald green.

“Sorry kiddo,” she whispers mildly. She plants one last kiss upon your forehead, moist and scented in perfume. She eyes another man and vanishes from view.

Thinking (Acrostic Only)

Hi all,

This post is written for Acrostic Only.

Thoughts desperate and loose
Harping her corner blues
Inclining on moon wings
Notes on silver strings
Knitting in night hour
Illuminating dreams lay sour
Naked night slowly bends
Gyrating pendulum never ends

Teenage Hero

Hi bloggers,

This is a free style poem I wrote. I hope you enjoy!

In the midnight
Of his adolescence
The preponderance
To sit still
On the windowsill
Of remembrance
Mirror of disgust
An awkward lust
To thrust
His teenage mind
Into the future
Disguise his angst
His pimply face
Four eyed geekness
Without a trace
Suave Clark Kent
Down a descent
Perchance a hero
Erase the zero
Manifesto of mind
He hits rewind
Within he is bold
The chapter unfolds

Pause (O.S.I.)

Hi bloggers,
This poem is written for O.S.I. The theme this week is pause.

She paused
With each heart beat
Rising crescendo
Butterfly heart
Singing alive
She paused
Full of rhythm
And soul
Red beauty
Pulsating and whole
Laying her palm
Against her chest
She paused

Trip Round the World

Hi bloggers,

It's been awhile since I posted for Thursday Tales. This week's entry is inspired by PompaElite.

I’ll take a trip round the world papa,” Gloria laughed. She was amused by the neon lights and painted clown faces. Papa grinned back at her with his righteous smile. She saw an image of herself in his large glasses, twinkling in the dark.

“How about the merry-go-round?” He hoisted her up on his shoulders, and she watched the majestic horses rise and float on air. They were lemon dropped, gray, red, and blue. He cradled her softly in his arms and squeezed her in a big embrace.

“I love horses,” she laughed and sprinted towards the line of children. Papa lifted her on a rose colored horse, and she leaned in close to his face.

“I’ll be right here watching you,” he whispered and kissed her black, curly forehead. She raised her head up and smiled. He watched her rise and fall on the red horse. The merry-go-round soon became a vast, circle of colors. He caught a glimpse of her spinning madly, fluttering in a whirl of children and carnival lights.

He remembered the evening as she met him in a trail of white. She was an ethereal bride in crystals and pearls. Her dark curls were swept up in a crown.

“Papa, one last trip around the world?” Her grin was infectious as she slipped into his arms. He embraced his daughter once more.

“Yes, my little Gloria.” And they glided down the aisle as the world spun in place.

Fancy (O.S.I.)

Hi all,
This poem is written for O.S.I. The theme this week is fancy.

It would please her
To permeate his skin
In deep rose and dusk
Her love satiated
By the gravity of lips and touch
How she fancied the evening
Starlit nightingales
And the moon
An island for two
The wind their orchestra
Universe etched in their names
But oh his incessant games!
Unromantic, unrepentant fool
He sleeps, growls, and drools
Candlelight for the lonely heart
She bottled the evening
Extinguished yearning after dark

Post October Fright

Hi all,

I planned on posting this for Halloween, but here is a bit of late October Fright. I hope you all enjoyed the festivities this weekend!!

She was mummified in a pair of velvet sheets. The room was still scented in lavender, and a flame flickered dangerously in the wind. She heard the crackle of thunder and sprang up. The rain blew viciously from the open window. She staggered towards the curtains and laid her head against the wet night. She heaved with all her weight, and the window shut with a resolute thud.

She slinked towards the bed in a dreamy haze. She felt an icy chill against her neck. Her candle was extinguished by a foreign breath. The curtains lunged at her body narrowly missing her. Suddenly, her bed shook, rose, and blocked the door. Darkness swam across her legs like an ominous sea. Shadows grew like vines against the walls.

Her heart catapulted from her ribcage and laid like a delicate, pink rose upon the floor. She glanced down in horror but she didn’t dare pick it up. Her eyes gleamed as the moon awaiting some unknown end.

Grace (O.S.I,)

Hi bloggers,

This poem is written for One Single Impression. The theme this week is grace. I used the poetic style triolet, though I've taken liberty on the rhyming scheme. Hope you enjoy.

Grace, the warm breath of forgiveness
Kneeling in prayer we inherit
Light and love, full and angelic
Grace, the warm breath of forgiveness
Song of spirit, friend in darkness
When the storm beats against our souls
Grace the warm breath of forgiveness
Kneeling in prayer we inherit

Worthy of time and love
Union of silence and peace

Can rest and rise
Be still and be

Lonely (O.S.I.)

Hi all,

This week's O.S.I. prompt is lonely.

Prize of her eyes
Tears thick and blue
Washes away her hope
Soap and water soothes
Lather smooth on skin
Lonely, beating heart
Submerges her within
Bubbles wafting slowly
From her lips

Sky Story

Drowning in her sorrows, she gazed wearily into the sky’s face. She watched a mural of colors ripple, recede. The sadness of her heart melted when the sun touched down.

The world is beautiful when you gaze into the sky. Happy Sky Watch All!

Barefoot Model

Hi bloggers,

The following story is posted for Thursday Tales. The accompanying image can be found here.

The world was singularly more fascinating through a lens. He enjoyed the inertia of photos, their place in time and space. The brilliance of the sky forever blue. The grandeur of church steeples against the skyline. But his favorite subject were people: a bicyclist, a couple holding hands, an old man with worldly eyes. His subjects were usually unaware of his spying, his intrusion on daily living.

He became particularly fond of his father’s old camera. A time piece into the brilliant world of black and white. “You’ve got a photographer’s eye,” his father chirped, entrusting him with the antique camera. He felt its delicate weight in his palms. How many scenic adventures and routes did the lens capture, witness? He laid the worn, leather strap against his neck and the camera swayed against his heart.

He observed the world in motion, the brilliant sky and clouds swimming in heavenly pools. But a black and white sky didn’t resonate with him so he turned his gaze on city people. They were blank, heavy, and stone faced, carved out of responsibility and engagement.
He was roused by a defiant laugh. A young girl tottered on the edge of a sidewalk like a trapeze artist. She wore a peppery dress and sported bare feet. Her little toes swept against stone like a brush upon canvas. She charmed him in the bliss of childlike simplicity. He raised his camera and clicked. Conscious of his lens, her eyes narrowed and she puckered her lips in dissatisfaction.

“Didn’t your mother teach you not to spy,” she scolded. She folded her arms and raised her chin.

“Don’t be angry little girl,” the young man smiled. “I’m a photographer and you are the perfect model.”

“Really,” she blushed. Pink rushed to her face in one, brilliant burst.

“Yes, it will be a prize photo worth a million dollars.” She jumped at the world million. The young man took the girl’s name and address. In a bright, pink envelope he wrote: To my barefoot model.

Silver Dime Makes A Fine River

Hi all,

The following is a recent short story I've written. I hope you enjoy!

The pride of the world could fit on a dime. She was convinced that if she squinted her eyes, she’d see tiny people skating on silver. The dime became her soul possession. She pressed it close to her heart and rubbed away the tarnish with her kisses. It swam in the cavernous depths of her pockets.

She was impoverished by circumstance but not in her mind. Her coat, withered by time and loss, hinted of her former glory. Her coat of colors, wine and rust, housed her sophisticated walk. Her cheekbones sloped along bronze complimenting her jet black hair. Pedigree leered at the line of poverty. Old age was but a speck on the horizon.

She was often mistaken as an heiress. Her belly fattened on her looks and charm. She turned her heels on the fashion district, and they besought her sphere of divinity. They regarded the antique silver as a link to her glory. Perhaps she was a descendant of the silver president. She buzzed with all the warm thoughts of the city. Her impoverished celebrity became the sweetest piece of irony.

She swam deep in a river of silver and thought not of the cares of tomorrow. His eye is on the sparrow, she smiled. I must be His masterpiece.

OSI: Joie de vivre

Hi bloggers,

This week's OSI prompt is the French phrase Joie de vivre (the joy of living).

Smile wide as the universe
Breathe deep into tomorrow
Hear the pattering heart echo
Taste the waters and swallow
From the generous wells of sky
Feel the richness of earth
Our senses stirred, invigorated
As the seasons pass us by
In succession they revive
Mirth and joy, lively jives
Words release a song
Budding ears are loved
Joie de vivre!

Thursday Tale: Old Friends

Hi bloggers,

This story is written for Thursday Tales.

Leanne was a sight to behold in her pink, frilly tutu. Uncle fancied her with cowgirl boots and a wide brim hat. Her eyes swam in blue skies along fresh, green meadows.

“She’s a real country gal,” we laughed, as she modeled her new clothes.

The country air buoyed Leanne’s spirit. At home, she was the shy girl with dark eyes. But visits to Uncle’s farm sparked a quiet brilliance in her. In the wind, we watched her soar with invisible wings.

“I’ve got one more surprise for you Leanne,” Uncle jested with a jovial smile. “How bout it ole’ girl. Let’s go have a look.” Her deep, brown eyes leapt up in wonder as we walked alongside her. A large, chestnut horse was visible beyond a wooden fence. Leanne looked up with tears in her eyes.

“For me,” she asked softly. She tottered slowly towards the fence, her arms stretching in the wind. Her mind had already embraced the horse, stroked its wide back, and laid against warm chestnut. But the horse barely raised its head to look at her. She trotted slowly in the opposite direction.

“Horsey,” Leanne wailed. Shakily, she climbed the fence, shrieking at the top of her lungs. No one could reach Leanne before she tumbled into the horse’s field. She sobbed uncontrollably in the grass. Her fingers tugged mercilessly at her dress and tears stung her cheeks.

Instinctively, the horse galloped towards Leanne. Her hooves thundered in a rapturous trot. Uncle cautiously laid down his hat and stooped beside her.

The horse dropped her brown neck low swinging her dark mane. Leanne smiled and rested her hand against its nose. Their eyes met in quiet contemplation greeting as old friends frequenting time and space.

Sky Watch Friday: September

Hi skywatchers,

This photo was taken just before sunrise. The sky is growing light with shades of blue and pink.

The presence of sun
Stretches against our building
Warm pink wrapped in sky
Delights the eyes
